Learn how to triple crochet in this crochet lesson #14.
The triple crochet stitch is also called a treble crochet stitch and is taller than a double crochet stitch. This stitch is made by yarning over the hook twice instead of only once. The triple stitch creates wide spaces between stitches, producing a loose fabric.
In addition to its versatility, mastering the triple crochet stitch can enhance any crocheter's skill set and widen their creative possibilities.
Triple Crochet Abbreviation
The triple crochet is abbreviated (tr).
Note: If you see the abbreviation (tr) in a crochet pattern, you will know this means to triple crochet into the following or designated stitch.

To Finish the First Triple Crochet Row:
How to Count Triple Crochet Stitches
The triple crochet is a tall stitch, and it is easy to identify all the stitches made in a row. Like the double crochet, use this stitch's post (body) as a guide for counting.
Note: The chain four (ch 4) turning chain is counted as a triple crochet stitch.
Learn how to make the second and following rows of the triple crochet stitch:
Note: This chain four is the turning chain, and it will bring the following triple crochet stitches up to the correct height.
Step #1: Yarn over the hook twice (yo 2).
Step #2: Skip the first stitch directly below the turning chain.
Reminder: Do not work a triple crochet stitch into the first stitch directly below the turning chain (the turning chain takes the place of this stitch). If you do this, you will add an extra stitch in your row and continue to add an extra stitch in each of the rows that follow.
Step #3: Insert your hook into the next stitch.
Step #4: Yarn over the hook (yo).
Step #5: Draw up a loop (pull the yarn through the stitch).
Step #6: There will now be four loops on your hook.
Step #7: Yarn over the hook (yo).
Step #8: Draw through (the first) two loops on your hook.
Step #9: There will now be three loops on your hook.
Step #10: Yarn over the hook (yo).
Step #11: Draw through (the next) two loops on your hook.
Step #12: There will now be two loops on your hook.
Step #13: Yarn over the hook (yo).
Step #14: Draw through (the last) two loops on your hook.
Step #15: The triple crochet stitch (tr) is now complete.
Step #16: Continue to work a triple (tr) stitch into each stitch across.
To Finish the Second and Following Triple Crochet Rows:
Place a Stitch Into the Turning Chain
To complete a row of triple crochet stitches, work a triple crochet stitch into the top of the chain four (ch 4) turning chain. Remember, the chain four counts as a stitch, so you must crochet into it to get the correct number of stitches for the row.
1. Create a foundation chain of 21 stitches.
2. Use the foundation chain to make a triple crochet swatch by following the steps in this lesson.
3. Your finished triple crochet swatch should have 18 stitches across and 7 rows going down.
