Learn how to half double crochet in this crochet lesson #12.
The half double crochet stitch is slightly taller than a single crochet stitch. This stitch is made by yarning over (yo) the hook first and then inserting the hook into a chain or stitch. A half double crochet stitch produces a neat and tight fabric similar to a single crochet stitch.
Half Double Crochet Abbreviation

To Make the First Row of Half Double Crochet Stitches:
Reminder: A crochet pattern will not separate the foundation chain from the turning chain. An actual crochet pattern will look like this - Foundation Chain: (ch 19).
Step #1: Yarn over the hook (yo).
Step #2: Insert your hook into the 3rd chain from the hook.
Step #3: Yarn over the hook (yo).
Step #4: Pull the yarn through the chain.
Step #5: There will now be three loops on your hook.
Step #6: Yarn over the hook (yo).
Step #7: Draw through all three loops on your hook.
Step #8: The half double crochet stitch (hdc) is now complete.
How to Count Half Double Crochet Stitches
Like the single crochet, the half double crochet (hdc) is a short stitch that can be difficult to identify. This is why I recommend counting the half double crochet the same way you would count a single crochet stitch.
Reminder: To count each half double crochet stitch, you must count each sideways V at the top of every row.
Note: The chain two (ch 2) does not count as a stitch in the half double crochet because it is a short stitch that does not require a tall turning chain.
Reminder: The loop on your hook at the end of each row does not count as a stitch.
To Make the Second and Following Rows of Half Double Crochet Stitches:
Note: The chain two is the turning chain, and it will bring the following half double crochet stitches up to the correct height.
Step #1: Yarn over the hook (yo).
Step #2: Insert your hook into the next stitch (front and back loop).
Step #3: Yarn over the hook (yo).
Step #4: Draw up a loop (pull the yarn through the stitch).
Step #5: There will now be three loops on your hook.
Step #6: Yarn over the hook (yo).
Step #7: Draw through all three loops on your hook.
Step #8: The half double crochet stitch (hdc) is now complete.
When half double crocheting in rows, you will notice that every other row has a horizontal ridge that slightly protrudes. The other rows do not have a ridge and are slightly buried back in. Taking note of this will help you decipher the rows of a half double crochet stitch.
If you find it challenging to locate the rows on a half double crochet swatch or project, stretch your swatch vertically to see the holes in your stitches. Every horizontal row of holes will count as the top of a half double crochet row.
1. Create a foundation chain of 19 stitches.
2. Use the foundation chain to make a half double crochet swatch by following the steps in this chapter.
3. Your finished half double crochet swatch should have 18 stitches across and 14 rows going down.
